The Mukegon Band Program

Established 1911 | Over a Century of Musical Excellence

The Muskegon High School Band Program stands as one of America's most distinguished high school music programs, with a legacy of innovation and excellence spanning more than a century. Founded in 1911 under Arthur H. Robertson, our program has continuously set national standards for high school music education.

The Golden Age & National Recognition

Under the legendary William Stewart Jr. (1936-1960), the program achieved unprecedented national prominence. Stewart's 25-year tenure established MHS as a model for music education worldwide, introducing revolutionary concepts that became industry standards. His innovations included the first high school band parents association (1937), patented electric lamp attachments for nighttime performances (1947), and sophisticated uniform designs that influenced programs nationwide.

Historic Achievements

  • 1980: National Champions - First place AAA division at American Music Festival, Nashville (competing against 62 bands from 20 states)
  • 1957: Featured as cover story in "First Chair of America" national publication
