End of Year Goals
U.S. History & Government
- Government: In grade 5, students study the structure and function of the US government with greater depth than in the year before. They learn how our government is organized to limit power by any one branch and how Federalism functions. Students also focus on the Bill of Rights and how these amendments both guarantee rights for citizens as well as limit powers of the government.
- History: Students focus exclusively on US History in grade 5. They will visit US History again in grade 8 as well as in high school. Fifth grade students focus on the history of America from the times of American Indians and European explorers until the creation of our new nation and the US Constitution. During this timeframe, areas of study include exploration, Native American life in various regions, the slave trade and slavery, colonial America, road to the Revolution, and the American Revolution.
