Mr. Matthew Cortez, Superintendent of Schools
349 W. Webster Ave.
Muskegon, MI 49440
I am extremely proud and excited to have been selected as the new Muskegon Public Schools Superintendent. My family and I discovered Muskegon while on vacation, and instantly fell in love with the beauty of the area and the friendly people we met. When I heard that the superintendent position was open, I was eager to apply.
I believe in the people of the City of Muskegon, and I know we are on the verge of tremendous success as a school and as a community. A key to that success is to open our arms, hearts, and minds as we work together to transform our school district and put students first in everything.
Once school begins, my first priority is to visit the students and staff in every classroom. This is the best way to gain an overall understanding of the people who work and learn in our schools. Being present in our school buildings is a core building block for our future. It is important for the students and staff to see me and understand who I am as a leader. But it is even more important for me to see them. Our students and staff deserve to be known and respected.
We have much work to do and many goals to accomplish. During my last five years as Superintendent in the Bay City area, I saw firsthand how aligning what’s best for our students and what’s best for our staff creates a “sweet spot” making us highly effective in teaching and learning. When that happens here, we will see improved student achievement, increased trust, and we will become stronger as a district and as a community.
I also want you to know my door is open to all. Call or email and tell me what you think. My email is firstname.lastname@example.org or call the central office and ask for me. I will always try to respond within 24 hours. You matter. Your opinion and experience matter.
